I never like receiving this type of call and having to give the bad news!
After all, custom window coverings and treatments are my specialty. But if the window is a specialty-shaped window – in other words, it’s not a square window – their choice of window coverings will be limited.
This means it will likely have to be a stationary shade. In other words, it will not open and close. A frustrating issue for homeowners who love the character and light that these types of unique windows provide.
Usually, they’ll call me when the heat is blasting during the summer months or when the low winter sun is shining in on their favorite spot at the dinner table.
But there are some options that I have available.
Honeycombs
Honeycombs are one of the most adaptable shades. In most situations, they will provide the most options for different shapes and sized windows. Whether it is a half moon, an angle, slim, or large, this is our best bet to work with in unique specifications.
We can also get creative. For example, we can build an operational blind for the square portion of the angle window, while the angle portion remains stationary.
Sheer Shades
Sheer shades like the Silhouette are a beautiful option. While stationary, we can set the shades to the open or closed position. The open position will filter in the light and dim that low sun.
Drapery
Drapery is a great option. Should you have a horizontal ceiling, the drapery can be operable. However, the drapes will be inoperable if it’s a steeped ceiling.
Plantation Shutters
Shutters, also known as plantation shutters CAN be operable. Although they have limitations, it is essential to work within these specs, especially if you are considering buying a home with specialty-shaped windows or are building or renovating.
